G Dub Boys VB killin it

Boys volleyball: Two-time defending champion Glenbard West going back to state (link) — Daily Herald

"Glenbard West has pretty much had its way with just about every opponent on the other side of the volleyball net, that is with the exception of practices over the last three springs.

The Hilltoppers -- in search of a third straight state championship -- knocked off Downers Grove North 25-14, 25-16 Tuesday night to claim the Oswego sectional crown and advance to the state finals for a fourth straight year. Coach Christine Giunta-Mayer, whose team is 38-1 this season, thinks her players are in a great place right now but credits her reserves' strong play in practice with playing a major role in the program's success."

Hilltoppers take on Hersey in the state quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Estates High School.

    Good luck men!

Glenbard West wins third consecutive state title (link) — Suburban Life
"The Hilltoppers knocked off Lincoln-Way East 25-21, 20-25, 25-16 June 3 for their third straight title, their third overall, and their fifth state trophy to go along with a fourth place finish in 2011 and third in 2014.

The senior group – Lilly, Murphy, Norvid, Scruggs, Winkler, setter Sean Farmer, serving specialist Grant Tecson, Jack Cranny, Paul Kaske, Ethan Marchetti, Anthony Schlesser and Kevin Tarczon – may not have matched the perfect 42-0 season of 2016 in which West did not drop a set the entire season. Instead, they entered the rarefied air of becoming just the second program to win three straight state titles, joining the 2007-09 Wheaton Warrenville South teams.

"I can't even believe it," West head coach Christine Giunta-Mayer said. "There's only one other team that's done it three times, but that wasn't our goal. Our goal was to finish our goals [for the season]. Our seniors wanted it so bad."

"Prior to Glenbard West's match against Lincoln-Way East on Saturday at Hoffman Estates, senior Matt Scruggs was asked about the possibility of joining an elite group of players who have been on two consecutive state championship teams.

Glenbard West completed only the second three-peat in IHSA boys volleyball history with a 25-21, 20-25, 25-16 victory over Lincoln-Way East. Robert Murphy had 10 kills, Cameron Lilly added 9 kills, 6-foot-9 junior J.T. Ardell had 7 kills and 5 blocks and Sean Farmer added 32 assists and 4 kills."
