Arrieta no hitter was great, the post-game even greater. Already designated as a "onesies/PJ" dress code for return trip on the charter flight home last night, it made for an outstanding post-game interview…MLB pitcher at podium discussing no hitter in mustache onesie pajamas…team photo to celebrate...fun stuff…

Cubs "no hitter indicator" spells market doom:

" Following Milt Pappas' September 1972 'no hitter', The Dow dropped over 40%.

Carlos Zambrano's 'no hitter' in 2008 came during the Lehman bankruptcy weekend and was followed by a 30% plunge in the S&P in the next three weeks, as well as a 6000-point-plus total collapse in the Dow.

So, when we saw Jake Arrieta's 'no hitter' this weekend, we can only imagine what doom it implies for US stocks.

And if that is not worrying enough, the last time The Cubs won the National League Pennant in 1945 - two cities were destroyed by atom bombs. "

The Chicago Cubs can start talking about magic numbers (link) — ESPN

    Excerpts...

"Over the weekend, you probably started to hear about those three special words not mentioned around the Chicago Cubs in several years. Yes, it's time to start talking about The Magic Number — if you haven't already begun that discussion at the dinner table, local bar or in social media. The Cubs have people buzzing in September again. It has been a while.

An incredible regular season is coming to a culmination. To think back in March, the Cubs would be in a position to clinch a playoff berth by the end of this brutal mid-September road trip they're about to begin, is mind boggling. In fact, if anyone thought they might be in the race this long, the three-city, 11-games-in-11-days trip would probably be the point where you might think the Cubs would cave. Instead, it's where they can secure their spot for October.

With a 7.5-game lead on the Washington Nationals any combination of Cubs wins and Nationals losses which adds up to 20 clinches a spot in the postseason. Nineteen gets them a tie but anything short of clinching early enough to set up Arrieta and the rest of the rotation would be a disappointment. That's how far expectations have come.

The Cubs are on pace to finish with the best winning percentage of any third-place team in major league history. It's quite the feat and lends credence to the central division being one of the best of all time. Consider, as the Pirates were finishing off their series win in St. Louis on Sunday, and the Cubs were resting at their hotel, three of the best baseball teams this season were in close proximity to each other. If all three get in, which is more likely to happen than not, only one will eventually emerge to move on to the National League championship series.

But first things first: The start of a long road trip and reducing that magic number. Let the countdown begin."

If they overtake the Pirates for the top NL Wildcard spot, they only get home field advantage in the Wildcard Game, correct? Even if they have a better record than the division-winning teams they face next?

Another frustrating tidbit for an NL Central fan... The three best NL teams are all in the NL Central, and yet the NL East vs. NL West winner will only have to play one of them in the NL Championship Series.

Correct, however, just saying on ESPN how Maddon prefers a road game for one-game playoff, fewer distractions.

Lot of head to head games with Bucs to determine this.

I believe the winner of the wild card play-in, plays the team with the best record, which would be the Cardinals. Best record, worst fans.
